Bad News...Good News!
According to a report by Dodge Construction Network, total construction starts rebounded in February, reaching a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $912.8 billion. This rebound comes as a result of bustling building activity for manufacturing plants and homes. Despite this, however, construction starts for the first two months of the year are still 17% below their 2022 levels due to a large dropoff in January. The commercial and institutional sectors are also facing weaknesses, which poses a cause for concern.
On a positive note, residential and nonresidential building starts rose significantly in February, with the former experiencing an 11% jump and the latter a 9% increase. Single-family homes even made their first gain in 13 months. However, non-building starts, which contain infrastructure projects, experienced a 5% decline.
It’s important to note that overall year-to-date numbers were down, but for the 12 months ending in February 2023, total construction starts moved 9% higher than the previous year, as reported by the Dodge Construction Network.
